Merit Badge Counselors |
Overview Being a merit badge counselor is a very important part of scouting. Without these counselors, boys will not be able to earn the eagle rank, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. To be a qualified counselor, you need to be either: 1) trained, 2) experienced or 3) have a hobby in the merit badge topic. Example, to teach the dentistry merit badge, an experienced dentist could be the counselor. To see the list of all ~126 merit badges, you can look at: http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Merit_Badges.
Signing up as a counselor To be a registered merit badge counselor in Troop 1978, you need to follow 4 steps: 1. Fill out an adult application that can be downloaded here: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/524-501A.pdf. In the unit position area, use code 42. For this form, there is no cost for merit badge counselors. You must fill out this form (again) even if you are a registered adult leader. 2. Fill out the merit badge counselor specific form at: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34405.pdf. 3. Take the youth protection training, which is online at: http://www.scouting.org/Training/YouthProtection.aspx 4. Work with the committee chairman or advancement chairman to have a clear understanding of the level of quality that the troop expects or our scouts.
Counselor Training As stated above, the troop has a requirement to have a high quality for our scouts. We hold this level for all adult leaders who interact with our scouts. We are happy to have a training session with any merit badge counselor so the counselor understands what is expected.
