Having your cake and eating it too

All too often when you have a high standard for quality for the boys, some will simply lose interest before they can achieve.  This is a sad fact, but it is one we must accept.

This past weekend's campout was a great example. We set out to have a great rifle shooting merit badge weekend, and we knew the challenge was a difficult one. In the past, I have seen many boys attempt and never would they all achieve. Add to that a higher standard of quality, and the number of boys who would have accomplished this goes down.  The summer camp average is 20%, meaning that ~15 boys should have failed the shooting portion of the weekend.

We were prepared for the emotional reaction of those who did not achieve. We were ready for the one on one conversations and for the rescheduling at a later time so they would have another opportunity to accomplish. We even shared with the boys that all would probably not achieve and that is OK.

With the outstanding work and patience of Scoutmasters Alverado, Salinas and Winkler, I am proud to say that all of that preparation was not needed. With the focus and dedication of those 3 men over 4 hours, every boy was able to accomplish the task of placing 3 shots in a circle no larger than a quarter at a distance of 50 feet. To that, I take my hat off and offer my appreciation for those 3 who made it happen.

While this was a great accomplishment, it almost overshadows another, namely the Patrol Method in action. This was the introduction of our 4 new patrol boxes (cooking boxes) and all 4 patrols (3 youth, 1 adult) cooked and cleaned flawlessly. It was so awesome, each Scoutmaster commented on how surprised and delighted they were that the patrols were all autonomous and self-sufficient.

Great campout had by all,
Kevin Saye, Scoutmaster
