Credit Card sales and scout fundraising |
Hi there! As we roll again into fundraising time, inevitably we get the question of "will the troop provide a way to use credit cards, like a square reader?" The committee discussed this specific issue in August, and at that time, the committee voted to not tie our primary bank account to any credit/debit mechanism. The primary reason for this is chargebacks and contested payments. While it may not seem possible on a popcorn order, it's entirely possible for someone to decide to contest a $10 charge for a camp card, and while there is the ability to go through the process of submitting evidence that "yes, a purchase was made", it would expand the scope of effort normally associated with the treasurer's role, and it would take time and energy to deal with it on many different people's parts. So, we decided against it being an official option that the troop provides. However, if you have one set up and tied to your own bank account, then if you want to use that and just submit checks or cash to the troop, we don't have a problem with that. Yes, there is always risk in accepting credit cards, so please be careful should you go down this path. A scout is trustworthy, but not everyone's a scout.
