Account checkup | Greetings!
I’ve finished with the payments out of passbooks for swamp base (t-shirts and water bottles) and summer camp. Make sure to check your balance and try to get close to positive if you aren’t already.
As usual, we don’t stress about money, but it all goes back to the trustworthy part of the scout law.
If you’re going to camp, have fun. If you’re going to Swamp Base, don’t get bitten by anything bigger than you. If you’re staying put, get ready for more great things to come.

Credit Card sales and scout fundraising | Hi there! As we roll again into fundraising time, inevitably we get the question of "will the troop provide a way to use credit cards, like a square reader?" The committee discussed this specific issue in August, and at that time, the committee voted to not tie our primary bank account to any credit/debit mechanism. The primary reason for this is chargebacks and contested payments. While it may not seem possible on a popcorn order, it's entirely possible for someone to decide to contest a $10 charge for a camp card, and while there is the ability to go through the process of submitting evidence that "yes, a purchase was made", it would expand the scope of effort normally associated with the treasurer's role, and it would take time and energy to deal with it on many different people's parts. So, we decided against it being an official option that the troop provides. However, if you have one set up and tied to your own bank account, then if you want to use that and just submit checks or cash to the troop, we don't have a problem with that. Yes, there is always risk in accepting credit cards, so please be careful should you go down this path. A scout is trustworthy, but not everyone's a scout.

Flood Bucket for the Methodist Church | We will be making 25 cleaning buckets to send to Louisiana. These bucket are given out to people in flooded areas. Louisiana has been hit extremely hard by the resent flooding. The buckets have all sorts of cleaning supplies in them. Each will cost approximately 30.00. That would be a $750.00 investment for the Troop. The Troop is going to pick half of this cost. I'm asking for every family to also donate 15.00 to cover the rest. This can be taken out of the passbook account. Please let me know if you would like to participate.
The SPL and a team will be going out to purchase all the supplies and on Oct 30th at noon the church is having a luncheon and assembling party.

Selling Popcorn!!! Never works!! Helping me go... | This is very simple. Every Scout needs to sell at least $1000.00 in popcorn. They make 28% on all popcorn sales to help fund their Scouting year!! Tanner will take his cost of going to Jamboree which is 425.00 plus 75.00 to get there. Total 500.00. So for him to sell enough popcorn he would have to sell $1785.00 ( $500.00 / 28 percent =17.85 x 100 =$1785.00) worth of popcorn to earn $500.00. So on his form he has $1785.00 as his goal in Big Numbers. It is very important for your Scout to understand this. He is not selling popcorn but the opportunity for them to help send them to Summer-camp, Jamboree, Swamp base or Philmont..doesn't matter which one just pick one. Then you need to circle 3 items on your form to help the customer make a decision. I would circle a microwave, your favorite and one other..Now the sales pitch
Knock on the door
Hi my name is Tanner I'm with Troop 1978... ...we meet right up the street. I am raising money to go to Jamboree this year and was seeing if you would help me out.... Jamboree is in West Virginia where 40,000 scout come together for 11 days. I will be working in the Scuba area... I have to sell $1785.00 worth of popcorn to go. (Shown them the form) I have circled the most popular popcorn we sell. Then be quite..wait for them to speak.. No matter what happens be polite and thank them...
Summer Camp cost approx $300.00 ($300.00 /28 percent = 10.71 x 100 - $1071.00)
Knock on the door
Hi my name is Tanner I'm with Troop 1978... ...we meet right up the street. I am raising money to go to Summer Camp this year and was seeing if you would help me out... We are going to Trevor Rees Jones in Athens where I will swim, canoe, horseback ride and go to merit badge classes. Its really a lot of fun... I have to sell $1071.00 worth of popcorn to go. (Shown them the form) I have circled the most popular popcorn we sell. Then be quite..wait for them to speak.. No matter what happens be polite and thank them...
If they would give you the objection they don't eat popcorn. Say I understand the Boy Scouts has partnered with the Military for over 10 years to send popcorn to our Men and Woman overseas. For a $25.00 or $40.00 donation it will be sent to them in over 60 different places...
In Troop 1978 all the money that each scout earns goes directly into their passbook account. This allows your Scout to be able to fund his own Scouting experience.. THE BEST TIME TO SELL POPCORN IS RIGHT NOW!!! LETS SPEND SOME TIME GETTING TO OUR GOAL!!! EVERY SCOUT SHOULD SELL AT LEAST $1000.00
If I can help please let me know..

Hornaday Award | I'm Very excited about this award!!! I have been meeting with David Parish who is in charge of the Hornaday Award for Duck Creek District. We have decided to try the program with 3 scouts. The program is designed to encourage learning about natural resource conservation and the environment, teach sound stewardship of the natural resources and the environment, and recognize those who are outstanding in this field. Since the original Hornaday medals and badges were established in 1914, slightly more than 1,000 bronze medals and 2,200 youth badges have been awarded. About 114 silver medals have been awarded since its establishment in 1975 and 357 adult gold badges since its establishment in 2000. These awards represent a substantial commitment of time and energy by individuals who have learned the meaning of a conservation/environmental ethic.
A good idea is to start with the badge and then work up to the bronze or silver medal. You must be a First Class Scout.
The following merit badges and project categories are the building blocks for a Scout to earn a Hornaday Award. See the Hornaday application for the Venturing requirements.
MERIT BADGES Energy* Environmental Science* Fish and Wildlife Management* Forestry* Public Health*
Soil and Water Conservation Bird Study Fishing Fly-Fishing Gardening Geology Insect Study Landscape Architecture Mammal Study Nature Nuclear Science Oceanography Plant Science Pulp and Paper Reptile and Amphibian Study Weather
*FOR THE HORNADAY BADGE, Scouts earn three of the merit badges listed above with a *, plus any two others. Then plan, lead, and carry out a significant project in natural resource conservation, from one of the project categories listed.
*FOR THE HORNADAY BRONZE MEDAL, Scouts earn the Environmental Science merit badge and at least three additional merit badges listed above in boldface, plus any two others. Then plan, lead, and carry out three significant projects from three separate categories listed.
*FOR THE HORNADAY SILVER MEDAL, Scouts earn all the merit badges listed above in boldface, plus any three others. Then plan, lead, and carry out four significant projects in natural resource conservation or environmental improvements, one each from four of the eight project categories listed.
Energy conservation Soil and water conservation Fish and wildlife management Forestry and range management Air and water pollution control Resource recovery (recycling) Hazardous material disposal and management Invasive species control
LET ME KNOW WHO IS INTERESTED IN THIS VERY PRESTIGIOUS AWARD!!!

Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge Sept 10 | This badge teaches you to place yourself in the shoes of someone else. This is very important given that one in five Americans report having a disability. I am very excited to have Jana Reph teaching this Merit Badge as one of her ticket items for Wood Badge. This is one Merit Badge I expect to see every Scout at. One of the biggest traits we learn in scouts is compassion and understanding. Please sign up for this merit badge so Jana will know how many to expect.

WinterCamp 2014, What a fun and cold time! | Scoutmaster Hermann and I had the pleasure of attending Winter Camp this year with 10 scouts. While I can't speak for the scouts attending classes, fun was had by all. It was a great way to end a great year of scouting. A few interesting points of interest:
1. This year, Akim (a.k.a. fat legs) decided to bring a coat, for a change. 2. We had a funeral for knify, who did not survive. RIP knify. 3. The trading post profited nicely and Keegan (a.k.a. Yoohoo Ninja), once again, consumed all the YooHoo in stock. 4. Jordan proved that a teenager can sleep through anything. 5. Boys love fire. 6. One way to get boys to leave their camp site, ask them to help clean.
A special shout out to Preston and Alex who staffed the event to make is a huge success for our people, and thousands of other attendees.
Lastly, no matter how rich or poor you are, 4 days in the cold will make you appreciate your home, bed and heater.

Family Campout, March 2014 | On March 21, our troop went on the family campout to Uncle Allen’s. This was my first time to attend a family campout. Although I have been to Uncle Allen’s before, this time I spent most of my time working with Mr. Sanderson and Mrs. Reininger in the cooking area. While I have cooked before on campouts, this was my first time to cook as much as I did. I learned just how hard cooking can be and know what it’s like to not just show up and eat the meals. Although I didn't have much time to even just sit down, I had a great time and I hope that everyone else did as well. While the rotisserie chicken took a long time to cook, this was my favorite meal to prepare. The only unfortunate thing that I know of during the weekend was me cutting my thumb while practicing my whittling skills. I promise that no blood ended up in anybody’s food, and I look forward to the next campout when someone else does the cooking.

New Troop Website! | All,
Earlier this month, our website hosting provider upgraded the server and broke our website. This simply happens sometimes and it gave me an opportunity to rewrite the entire website.
Because I had to rewrite it, I took the opportunity to make a few changes that I wanted to make, including: simplifying the calendar and the upload area/library as well as combining the Scout Corner area and the News area. When you submit a news article, it will instantly email all troop members both the topic and the entire article/calendar entry.
Anyone can submit news, items to the library and calendar entries. If you ever need to send an email to the entire troop and your email is not working, you can always post an article.
If you are having any problem or discover an error message/bug, please email me the information and I am happy to look into it and fix it.
Enjoy,

Thanks to all the scouts, scouters (Adults) and family members who showed
up and helped out during the Breakfast with Santa event. 15 youth and 7
adults helped the Church host breakfast and shopping for several family in
need.
The sleigh was a great hit again and I think all who attended had a great
time. Special thanks to Alex M. and family. Way to get involved as
a new scout member!

Keeping Garland Beautiful, one day at a time | Yesterday I had an opportunity to help keep my wonderful city beautiful. With me were 5 scouts and another Scoutmaster, Tom Salinas.
We had a great time and collected bags of trash along the way! We even met up with another youth organization, Garland Youth Council (http://www.garlandyouthcouncil.org) that I did not know exist.
During our trash pickup, we discovered several things including: shopping carts in the creek, dead raccoons (a favorite), beverage containers, paper, plastic bags, a cape and a vehicle side mirror. While we were there, Armando, Martin and Gerald all fell in love with Frisbee golf.
Working hard, a reporter came by and captured us in action. You can read the write-up here: http://www.aroundgarland.com/city.cfm?article=1338 and you can see some of the pictures here: http://www.aroundgarland.com/photoalbum.cfm?id=1338.
After the event we all had hot dogs, drinks and chips. We also entered for door prizes and guessed at how many storm drains were in the City of Garland (ask anyone who when if you think you know the answer). Hint: 10,001 (my guess) was too high.
Lastly, a special shout out to:
1. Cub Scout Pack 276, for collecting the most bags, 2. Garland Water Department for the cool pens and notebooks 3. The Girls Scout Troop (100 I think) who saved 2 new kittens
I had a great time and I would like to thank the boys for helping and Scout Master Salinas for leading this event.

Great Work Armando S. | On Friday December 16th, I was invited to Armando’s service project and had a chance to meet most of the Garland Cross Guards.
For those who did not know, a while back Armando noticed some Crossing Guards helping children cross the street, but they were cold and not wearing gloves. Armando though and asked his mom "can we help them by buying some gloves and hats?"
After careful planning, they decided to raise the money purchase hats and gloves for ALL 84 Garland crossing guards. They raised over $700 for this occasion!
On Friday December 16th they surprised the crossing guards with this them gift. I was honored to represent the troop and watched Armando give a great speech. I was then humbled to see how appreciative the guards were. They were happy someone though of them and I was shocked that no one had ever done anything like this before.
Pictures were taken, stories were told and Armando was the man of the hour.
Great work Armando!

BIG THANK YOU to Mr Saye and Mr McKelvey for our C | We want to send a great big THANK YOU to Mr Saye and Mr McKelvey for putting together a wonderful day of working on our computers merit badge. We are so thankful for their experience in the computer industry and for teaching us so much in one day. We had a great attendance of about 25 scouts. We got to see the data center at the BSA headquarters and also went to Microsoft. We played video games and even learned how to program some HTML. We are truly blessed to have this experience. I also enjoyed working with all the scouts helping them program. I think they should make the computers merit badge required for Eagle Scout. It is so important for them to know about computers. I can't wait to see what these guys do when they grow up. THANK YOU again!

A Great Big Thank You | Thank you to Michael Cole, Sharon Faulkner, Greg Haskell and Ellen Reininger who spent 4.5 hours auditing our books for the past year. There was a lot of information and several binders full of papers to look through, but they worked hard and did a thorough job of completing the audit.
Thank you for your time and your suggestions and ideas on how we can continue to improve our accounting and record keeping.

Happy Anniversary | 9 days ago marked our 1 year anniversary. Then we started with 5 scouts and just a few adults. One year later we are up to 27 scouts and over the next few weeks I am guessing we be at 37 scouts!
What a fast and wonderful year it has been. We have accomplished so many merit badges, canoed over 20 miles, rode horses and even melted metal! While I do believe the past year has been great, I eagerly look forward to the next 12 months now that we are experienced.
While growing does have its challenges, change is good great. I eagerly look forward to the new scouts and leaders + watching the existing scouts excel in things like: Order of the Arrow and high adventure camping. We have even started to see the patrols, such as the Pyromaniacs, branch out to do their own thing and really show the rest of the troop what leadership is all about.
Happy to be at Troop 1978, Scoutmaster Kevin Saye

Troop 1978 Service Hours |
- Service hours are limited to 2 hours per project, meaning that a star / life scout would have to do a minimum of 3 different projects to gain 6 service hours
- Service hours must be pre-approved by the “service hour” scoutmaster
- After the service hours are completed, the scout is to discuss the project with the “service hour” scoutmaster, who will certify the hours have been completed
- Service hours may not benefit, be scheduled by or be on BSA property, meaning that scouting for food would not count
- Service hours may not benefit or be scheduled by our charter organization – Cornerstone United Methodist
- After completion of the service hours, the scout must provide an oral summary to the troop during a troop meeting
- The service hours must be maintained both in the scouts book, signed by the “service hour” scoutmaster and in the Advancement’s records (TroopMaster)
- Life rank service hours must show leadership qualities
- Assisting in an eagle project does not qualify for service hours, as this is normally expected from a scout
- Scoutmaster Winkler will serve as the “service hour” scoutmaster

Two sides to every coin | Over this past weekend the troop had a great time camping. We enjoyed the weather, canoeing, ‘Saturday Night Entertainment’ and completing the youth leadership training. All in all, anyone would have said: a great time had by all.
It often times surprises me how what one person sees as a problem, others see as a great thing. Case in point, this weekend the adults discussed for probably an hour how the patrols were cooking and cleaning. While we were concerned that they were burning the food, causing food safety issues and having a challenging time cleaning up. The boys had a different opinion. They thought the cooking and food were GREAT and ranked them as one of the funnier things -- like canoeing.
This just goes to show you and constantly reminds me that in a boy run troop, you need to let the boys run it and as an adult leader stop worrying [too much], as they are scouts and they will pass most every challenge.

Having your cake and eating it too | All too often when you have a high standard for quality for the boys, some will simply lose interest before they can achieve. This is a sad fact, but it is one we must accept.
This past weekend's campout was a great example. We set out to have a great rifle shooting merit badge weekend, and we knew the challenge was a difficult one. In the past, I have seen many boys attempt and never would they all achieve. Add to that a higher standard of quality, and the number of boys who would have accomplished this goes down. The summer camp average is 20%, meaning that ~15 boys should have failed the shooting portion of the weekend.
We were prepared for the emotional reaction of those who did not achieve. We were ready for the one on one conversations and for the rescheduling at a later time so they would have another opportunity to accomplish. We even shared with the boys that all would probably not achieve and that is OK.
With the outstanding work and patience of Scoutmasters Alverado, Salinas and Winkler, I am proud to say that all of that preparation was not needed. With the focus and dedication of those 3 men over 4 hours, every boy was able to accomplish the task of placing 3 shots in a circle no larger than a quarter at a distance of 50 feet. To that, I take my hat off and offer my appreciation for those 3 who made it happen.
While this was a great accomplishment, it almost overshadows another, namely the Patrol Method in action. This was the introduction of our 4 new patrol boxes (cooking boxes) and all 4 patrols (3 youth, 1 adult) cooked and cleaned flawlessly. It was so awesome, each Scoutmaster commented on how surprised and delighted they were that the patrols were all autonomous and self-sufficient.
Great campout had by all, Kevin Saye, Scoutmaster

Scouting for Food, a great success | This past Saturday we had the opportunity to participate in "Scouting for Food". This year, we chose to not just drop off bags, but instead to knock on doors and ask people directly for assistance.
Talking to people was a wonderful experience, meeting people from many walks of life. Some gave just a few items, some gave whole bags full, and some chose not to give.
I think the boys, 8 in total, had an outstanding time and really make a difference. We collected 497 items all donated to the Good Samaritan Food Bank of Garland.
One of the craziest things we collected: Girl Scout cookies!

Scouting and Indy Racing | This Thursday I had an opportunity to see the BSA (Car 19) Indy race car and ride in a two seater Indy car racing around Las Colinas. What an experience of a lifetime!
Before the race, we were all treated to a great speech by Bob Mazzuca, the Chief Scout in all of BSA and an Eagle Scout himself. Bob talked about how Indy racing and scouting had a lot in common. Both are a team effort where you had to rely on your team. Both are a journy, not won by any one scout rank or Indy race. Both require so much from you (both mentally and physically), in preperation, education and dedication.
Did I mention I got to ride in an Indy car?
Alex Lloyd, the BSA Indy car driver then spoke about being in scouting in England. While he did not have a chance to achieve Eagle Scout, he is (and has to be) a well educated man to understand the science of driving an Indy car. Alex added that at the end of a race, mentally the driver is exhausted and physically they will lose about 8 pounds.
Did I mention I got to ride in an Indy car?
One boy asked a question about "why is there a wing on the back of the car?". Dale Coyne, the owner of the BSA #19 car, stated it creates down draft to keep the car hugging the road and how on different tracks, they have different wings. Alex then added that with some wings, there is enough down draft to allow a car to drive in a tunnel and "hug" the ceiling (yes that is right, drive on the ceiling). Talk about science!
All in all, it was a GREAT time and I really learned to appreciate Indy racing. Also, did I mention I got to ride in an Indy car? Look in our scout pictures area for a picture of the boys in front of the #19 car and a picture of me riding in the 2 seater Indy car. For the record, I asked Mr. Mazzuca and Mr. Coyne if I could drive. Without hesitation, they said "No". :)

Scout Example | I just wanted to share with everyone something that happened at Monday night's meeting (on May 16th). The Scouts were outside playing a game and some were coming in to get a drink of water. I was getting my stuff together to carry out to my car. Luke Winkler walked up to me and asked if he could help carry anything. I told him, "No thank you," but he insisted and grabbed the white board to help me carry it to my van. When I got to the doors of the church several scouts came running in and pushed past me. Luke then proceeded to open the other door and held it for me. Luke's actions took little effort on his part, but made a big impression on me. What a great example of living: the Scout Oath "To help other people at all times" the Scout Law "Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind" and the Scout Slogan "Do a Good Turn Daily!" It only takes a few minutes out of your day to offer someone a helping hand, look around and see what you can do to show your Scout Spirit. You might makes someone's day.

3 new scouts join Troop 1978 | We are thrilled to have 3 new scouts join the troop last Monday, with more to come.
Alex, Gerald and Matthew all joined the troop and are part of the "no name" patrol - to be named later. All 3 come to us from Pack 1978.
Alex is a great scout, and is ready to go. He has requested another Horse Ride Saturday and he will be scheduling it so he and 4 others can earn the Horsemanship Merit Badge. What a team player!
Gerald is very interested in all the Merit badges and has decided to earn them all! To show his modesty, he has decided to only earn 2 a month.
Matthew, I have been told, is VERY excited to join the troop and is ready for the fun challenges that Boy Scouts brings above and beyond Cub Scouts. His first challenge will be the Rifle Merit Badge.
Good luck to you all and the entire troop (scout and adults) are happy to have you join us.

What a great day to be in Scouting | Today must have been one of the better days in Scouting. I had the rare opportunity to watch ~40 scouts participate in the best Scout Sunday I have ever seen. One Boy Scout Troop, two Venture Crews and a Girl Scout Troop all pulled together for this Sunday of Sundays.
As inspiring as watching the Scouts sing and help out what, I think the funniest part was when the Scouts all had down time in-between services. Then we have a campfire (battery operated candle), and had the rare opportunity to ask questions of the circle. Here were just a few of the question:
1. Do you like Justin Bieber? 2. How many pushups can you do? 3. What is your favorite color of mascara? 4. If you could go anywhere, where would it be?
As I am sure you can imagine, the answers ranged far and wide among the boys and girls. Pictures of the event will soon be posted on the Troop photo website.
As if that was not a great day so far, we also had the opportunity to sell firewood after one of the coldest weeks in history. We were able to raise $330.00, and the boys even paid for their own lunch (the lunch of all lunches, hotdogs).

Fund raiser that is actually fun! | This past Saturday we had a great time selling firewood. We had lots of buyers (8) and this was a very profitable activity.
Working in groups of 2, the scouts had a great time selling and each put about $35 in their passbook account.
Selling popcorn is good and generates more money than anything else, but selling firewood is: 1) team oriented, 2) easy and 3) fun for the boys.
I think we will use this activity a few more times to take advantage of the winter months we have left.

Tracking Merit Badge December 31st | At the tracking merit badge workshop we all earned the badge. It was tough, cold and the only live non-bird we found was a turtle - if you don't count all the domesticated dogs. We hiked about 3 miles from the Spring Creek Reserve beginning (Holford Road) to the end (North Shiloh Road). We took pictures of birds, made plaster molds of animal (mainly dog) prints.
The hardest part was the first mud slope down to the creek. we slid and fell (except Martin and I) then found nothing. We all struggled our way up. I managed to reach the top first, but Eric was the first one back on the trail. One scout was so stuck he was giving up, but in the end we got everyone back on the trail. :)
The second slope was not as bad except one boy rolled the whole way down and almost into the water. Glad his fall was stopped by other scouts, else he would have taken a very cold bath.
In the end it was worth it all.

Procrastination vs. Be[ing] Prepared | With the turning of the year, the opportunity to earn one of the four retired BSA 2010 Merit Badge has come and gone. Working on a badge with my son and with five other boys on December 31st reminds me of the Boy Scout Motto: Be Prepared.
Obviously this is something they still have to learn. :)
So what is “being prepared”? Does it mean always having the answer and having no mistakes or forgotten things? No.
Being prepared means planning and thinking things out. In the case of the BSA 2010 Merit Badges it would include scheduling, pre reading the requirements, contingency plans (what to do if it rains your day out of if you get sick) and making sure you have all the items needed.
When I look back to the 6 boys that were working on the badge on the 31st, I noticed a few things:
* 2 of the boys wore shorts, when it was cold and we were walking in the brushy forest – yikes! * 1 of the boys work crocks - not the rubber soled shoes needed * 2 of the boys did not have coats in the 40 - 50 degree weather * 1 of the boys did not have a warm enough coat
There were some great things, such as:
* one of the boys brought a snack for the 5 hour event * some of the boys brought pens or pencils to write with * some of the boys brought cameras to take the required pictures
While we are not all perfect, being prepared is a something that we can all strive for. It simply means we will have the best time possible and avoid danger (exposure) if we just spend a few minutes if planning.
I can remember when I was a child, sure I was not always prepared but eventually I learned the value of preparation -- and that is what scouting is all about learning values along the way.

Though it started bad with waiting for the bus which took forever :( ! We had a good time starting off with a good breakfast. We went to tomahawk throwing, the Police area, and the Military area. Mathew got locked in the police car's back showing how criminals can't escape police cars. We have some picture of some of the scouts in military uniforms. We saw a cool airshow with a lot of fancy tricks. We played games such as ninja competitions and football. We also had a nice gateway which became the meeting area. Merit Badge Counselors | Overview Being a merit badge counselor is a very important part of scouting. Without these counselors, boys will not be able to earn the eagle rank, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. To be a qualified counselor, you need to be either: 1) trained, 2) experienced or 3) have a hobby in the merit badge topic. Example, to teach the dentistry merit badge, an experienced dentist could be the counselor. To see the list of all ~126 merit badges, you can look at: http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Merit_Badges.
Signing up as a counselor To be a registered merit badge counselor in Troop 1978, you need to follow 4 steps: 1. Fill out an adult application that can be downloaded here: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/524-501A.pdf. In the unit position area, use code 42. For this form, there is no cost for merit badge counselors. You must fill out this form (again) even if you are a registered adult leader. 2. Fill out the merit badge counselor specific form at: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34405.pdf. 3. Take the youth protection training, which is online at: http://www.scouting.org/Training/YouthProtection.aspx 4. Work with the committee chairman or advancement chairman to have a clear understanding of the level of quality that the troop expects or our scouts.
Counselor Training As stated above, the troop has a requirement to have a high quality for our scouts. We hold this level for all adult leaders who interact with our scouts. We are happy to have a training session with any merit badge counselor so the counselor understands what is expected.

2013 National Jamboree
The Jamboree was awesome!!!!! It lasted from the 13th to the 24th of July.We had several scouts from our troop go. There were patch traders everywhere: in the bathroom, on the side of the road, etc. All of the activities were super hard-core. They had a huge half pipe for skate-boarding, super big bmx traxs, and amazing zip lines. The pizza place was fantastic, and the food we cooked was a little sketchy. The bus ride was fun but it was all to West Virginia + it was a super nice bus. I rained every day so are camp site was a swamp, which was pretty annoying. Because it rained so much it was very humid. Mike Rowe(from Dirty Jobs) spoke at the stadium show where 3 Doors Down also preformed. There was an amazing fireworks display on Sunday. Overall it was amazing!!!!! I loved it!!!!!!! Scout Corner | Summer Camp - Jun 10-17, 2012 We had a grand adventure at Camp Constantin this year. We took 22 scouts
and 4 adults to Summer Camp. Each of the scouts took 3 classes in the
morning and 2 in the afternoon with a open period at 4:00 each day where
they could swim or do shooting sports. Some of them chose to have
social hour at our campsite with Mr Salinas. They divided the meal times
into A and B meal. We ate B meal and really liked it. The food was
really pretty good this year. It rained a few times at night and we had a
few "cool" days to break up the heat. First year scouts went on an
overnight hike up Johnson's Peak. It was really fun until we had to wake
up at 3:00am and go back to camp because a storm was coming. Friday
night some parents came to visit and we had water competitions including
a homemade raft race and a water relay race. We didn't win, but we had
lots of fun and lots of laughs. Overall - It was a very memorable week.
Troop Elections - Jul 2, 2012 We elected a new Senior Patrol leader. Preston is our new SPL. We also mixed up our patrols. The new patrols are Phatom Bunnies, Sabertooth, Spider Pig and Challenge Accepted.
House Painting Project - Jul 7-8, 2012 We painted a house in Garland for a service project on the weekend of
Jul 7-8. We had a great turnout of 17 scouts, 10 adults and 3 siblings
to help us. We painted for most of day on Saturday and had hot dogs for
lunch. We had to quit near the end of the day because of rain. We went
back and finished the job on Sunday morning. Overall, we painted all the
siding white, tan trim and replaced some of the siding and installed
new screen doors on the front and back. We worked really hard and felt a
great sense of accomplishment to help a needy family in our community.
Lockin and Hawaiian Falls - Jul 7-8, 2012 After painting the house, we spent the night at the Firewheel pool/
clubhouse. We had to wait for the rain and lightning to clear, but we
were able to swim after the rain. Several boys took their BSA swim test
and then we had some great fun. We grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and
also had corn on the cob and we ate a lot of food because we worked up
an appetite while painting and swimming. That night we all lined our
sleeping bags, cots and air mattress in the clubhouse and slept very
hard. In the morning Tanner and JD cooked us a breakfast of bacon and
pancakes. After finishing our house painting project, we went to Hawaiian Falls.
We had Little Ceasar's pizza for lunch before going to the park. We had a
great time chilling out and riding the water slides.

We had the additional challenge of the wind blowing everyone's plate around the place. In my opinion the best meal item was cereal. We received our merit badge class schedules on that same day. The next day after breakfeast we went to our classes. We had a two hour break, which included lunch, after our first two classes. After our last classes we could do pretty much whatever we wanted; but don't forget about the buddy system that made us go everywhere with a buddy!! After free time the camp counselors usually host an event such as campfires, movie night, etc. It was basically like that all week except for our service project where we made name plates for each camp site. The counselors also held an even called possum fest; it was like a fair without roller coasters. It was fun! TFC, trail to first class, went on a hike to Johnson's peak. We stayed up there overnight. I won't mention the exhausting trip up to the peak, or the visit by the scorpion, but everyone got there safely. One of the things the scouts fell in love with was the snack shop which helped us to overcome home sickness and the regular camp "food". Personally I hated feeling so home sick that I wanted to cry but, thanks to the activities, I survived. We entered a raft race and, although we didn't move an inch from land, we won an award for "best looking raft". In addition to that, we won the Baden Powell Award, a very important award. We also had the Order of the Arrow (OA) activities which was tiring because we had to keep our arms crossed for the entire event. Three members of our troop, Preston Sanderson, Ethan Marcom and Nicholas Reiniger, were selected to possibly be members of the OA. To wrap it up it was a fantastic experience.

Scout Corner | Crossover Campout
At Cooper State Park we had a fun time. The crossover is mainly for the webelos crossing over into boy scouts. But it is more better if the selected Troop is there too welcome then. Sadly, Preston was not able too attend this Campout :(. So Ethan was there to lead this campout. But when we notice that our top leader is not there. You see how much the Troop depended on that leader, So it is interesting to see how much the troop " falls apart ". Of course like every campout there was things getting in the way with the campout. #1 You remember that thing yall called " fishing ". Well to Gerald it was fishing, because he actually caught a fish, magically. But It takes more than 3 inches of water for it too be called "fishing". Ok, while the Pack was having fun with an obstacle course, The Troop split up into 2 groups. One Group went '"fishing" while the other group went hiking. Now, this hiking had many side effects. We had many people with serious Chafing*. I actually had really super duper bad chafing. The way to fix this is baby powder. ( and a lot of it ). Also i took a Philmont style shower. By rolling up my dirty clothes and using it as a towel. Note: Always bring a towel, baby powder, and soap to a campout!
*Chafing is when your boxers or your testicles rub against your legs when all sweaty and creates a rash on your legs. This can also happen on your butt. And makes you walk bowl legged.
I am sorry for the lateness of this article.

Scout Corner | Scout Leadership Training Campout
On Friday March 11, 2011 we traveled from Cornerstone Baptist Church to Camp Wisdom for our leadership training. Everyone learned about their duties and responsibilities in the troop training session. We also learned who we need to go to to direct our questions if we have any questions about our positions. For instance the Patrol Leader goes to the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader if he has any questions; In my case I, as the historian, would also go to the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader if I have trouble writing a report. This was a really fun and exciting campout that I hope all the Scouts will remember.

All the area Boy Scouts were invited to collect food donations for the Scouting For Food drive on Feb 18, 2012. Troop 1978 had 16 scouts and 8 adults who collected food donations by going door-to-door. We collected 1027 food items that weighed 1029 pounds and took our donation to the Good Samaritan food bank in downtown Garland. We also had someone donate a picture frame. What a great way to help our community and those in need. pictures

Rifle Shooting Merit Badge Camp out Friday we left to go to Camp Constatin, The same camp we are going to for summer camp, To hopefully earn the rifle shooting merit badge. To requirement we came to do is that of you must shoot 3 shots and must be covered in the circumference of a quarter, This is not as easy as it seems. This means that you have 3 rounds, you shoot each round and then go up to the target and if each shot is not able to cover up or touch the area of a quarter, you try try again. This took me 10 times to do, Partly because me and Eric were battling a great war of allergies because of the many cedar trees at Camp Constatin. We all "quartered" at least once. Unless you are the great magical SPL who quartered every time till they finally kicked him out because he quartered 5 times. NOTE: to all future summer Camp-ers if you have allergies to cedar please bring allergy medicine like Benedryl.
I apologize to everybody of the lateness of the article i have been really super duper EXTREMELY busy.

METAL WORKING CAMPOUT
On Saturday we did metal working. A few people made hangers, a tool which we'll use in summer camp, or they made a stake turner. Both objects were hard to make. A few scouts had the chance to make a metallic feather. One of our requirements was to make something in foundry. Some people made chess pieces, others made figurines. On Sunday a majority of the troop took a hike with our backpacks from our campsite to the entrance of Camp Wisdom. Basically the highlights of this camp were so amazing that some want to come back and do it again!

Scout Corner | January Horsemanship Campout
This past weekend we had a fun time at Camp Cherokee. We came to this camp hoping to fufill the Horsemanship Merit Badge. We all had fun and enjoyed all the Webelos from Pack 1978 coming and having fun. Riding horses was alot of fun( except the pain after the riding). And we hope that the webelos will join us on our other campouts and troop meetings. We all earned the Horsemanship Merit Badge ( PLEASE TURN THE WORKSHEETS IN AND YOU WILL EARN IT.) and the Webelos earned their horseback riding belt loop.

Scout Corner | Animal Science Campout
At this recent campout we had a good time. We started at a vets office. we saw tools, different rooms and a blood donor dog named Houdini. We even had a scout try a dog treat. Next we went to the ranch had lunch. We went on a trailer ride to see cows. the only problem was... rain. It poured even as we went to sleep by our bonfire. the next day we got to meet Scooby and Barley the dogs. We got to use the torpedo heater!!!!!!! :). we went to a dairy farm with 100 cats, 100 beef cows, and 250 dairy cows. The dairy cows were sucking our fingers and one was swallowing preston's hand. We used a swing that Preston and Alamine swung on and Armondo failed off ( was hilarious). in the end we had a good time.
